Why a GIF on X is really a video

X does not serve animated GIF files in posts. When you upload one, it is transcoded to a short, silent, looping MP4 and displayed as though it were a GIF. The GIF tool exists because of that gap: what you download is the video file X actually stores. If you need a true .gif, convert the saved clip yourself with a local tool, accepting the quality and file-size trade-off that format carries.

Use the post URL for the specific tweet

Copy the address of the post holding the media rather than a profile or a search result. Both x.com and the older twitter.com form identify the same post. Quoted posts can embed media from another post, in which case the media belongs to the original and you should submit that one.

What the public endpoint will not give you

Protected accounts, posts from accounts that have blocked automated access, deleted media and anything behind a login are out of reach. Availability is checked per link, so a tool page listing X is a statement about included extractors, not a guarantee for every URL.

Questions before you download

Can I get a real .gif file?

Not from X directly, because X stores these as silent looping MP4s. Convert the downloaded clip locally if you need the GIF format.

Does the old twitter.com link still work?

Yes. Both the x.com and twitter.com forms point at the same post.

Can I download from a protected account?

No. Protected posts require a session and are not supported.
