Why a downloader cannot always promise MP4
YouTube publishes its best video and its best audio as two separate streams. They are combined into one file after downloading, and the container has to be one that can legally hold both codecs. When the best available streams are AV1 or Opus, MP4 is not a valid container for them and MKV is used instead. A tool that promises MP4 for every video is either re-encoding your file or handing you a lower-quality stream.
How to get MP4 more often
Choosing a resolution cap rather than Best available raises the chance of an MP4, because the older H.264 and AAC streams that fit in MP4 are usually published at the common resolutions. This is a trade, not a trick: you may be choosing a slightly lower quality stream to get a particular container.
MKV plays almost everywhere anyway
VLC, MPV and most modern players open MKV without any setup. Renaming the file to .mp4 does not convert it and can stop it opening at all. If a specific device or editor truly requires MP4, convert the file yourself with a local tool once, rather than downloading it repeatedly.
Know the limits

Is MKV worse quality than MP4?
No. The container describes how tracks are packed, not how good they are. An MKV here often holds a better video stream than the MP4 alternative.
Can I force MP4 for every download?
No, and a service that claims to would be re-encoding or downgrading your file. Pick a resolution cap if the container matters more than the last increment of quality.
Will renaming MKV to MP4 work?
No. The extension is a label, not a conversion. Use a local converter if you genuinely need the format changed.
How do I convert a YouTube video to MP4?
Paste the link, inspect it, and choose a resolution cap rather than Best available if the container matters. No conversion step is needed when the source already provides MP4-compatible streams.
Why do other sites always give me MP4?
Either they re-encode your file, which costs quality and time, or they hand you an older lower-quality stream that happens to fit in MP4.
Does MP4 or MKV play on an iPhone?
MP4 plays natively. MKV needs a player such as VLC, which is free. Converting once locally is better than re-downloading.
Can I convert MKV to MP4 without losing quality?
Yes, a local remux copies the streams into a new container without re-encoding, provided the codecs are MP4-compatible.
